Ethics and Human Resources

Ethics and Human Resources

Human resources make ethical choices and deal with the consequences on a daily basis. Although there is a huge number of policies, codes of ethics, and codes of conduct, in our work environments, lapses in workplace ethics happen everyday. It is the responsibility of Human Resources to make sure that the employees of the company practice good ethics.

Policies usually exist because not all employees are trustworthy. Many in the Human Resources profession debate over how effective the paid time off (PTO) policy is compared to the policies that divide available time days between personal, sick time, and vacation days. Unfortunately, these policies exist because of some employees dishonesty. Human Resources needs to be cautious about all of their employees. Human Resources also has to make policies to cover all employees due to poor decisions by other employees.

The CHRP is the Certified Human Resources Professional. The CHRP National Code of Ethics makes sure that everyone who is certified in CHRP carry out their duties of Human Resources with professionalism. They must also show good judgement and ethical behaviour at all times. When employers hire CHRP holders, they know that they are taking on employees who adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct.

It is important to enforce the Code of  Ethics to ensure it's credibility. Enforcement is done through 2 committees which are organized by each provincial CHRP.
1. Complaints, Investigation, and Discipline Committee.
They have the responsibility for hearing complaints from the general public or members of their association. They conduct investigations and enforce disciplinary actions against anyone who violates the code.

2. Appeals Committee.
They investigate when appeals are made by the complainant or registrant.

Human Resources have a very important role within their business. It is up to Human Resources to first set the standards of ethics, and to enforce them. They are the individuals who make up the workforce of an organization. Human Resources provide a critical service to the organizations in which they work.
